Erectile Dysfunction Causes
Erectile dysfunction is a health complication that causes the inability of the penis to erect or maintain erection. This causes loss of sexual satisfaction and marriage problems. This problem is preventable but cure is still under clinical trials using cord blood stem cells gene therapies. |

Erectile dysfunction is caused by physical, physiological, and chemical factors. Diabetes can be one of the key reasons behind erectile dysfunction, as diabetes causes nerve impulses and damage to arterials. This blocks communication of the penile muscles from the brain.
Kidney diseases like kidney failure and prostate cancer impairs the nerve of the penile arteries. It disrupts blood flow to the penile muscles hence the tissues served by the malfunctioning blood vessels die. It lowers libido due to blockage of hormones and nervous communications. Multiple sclerosis, atherosclerosis, high cholesterol level, and high blood pressure inhibit blood flow to the erectile tissues. The arteries harden due to deposition of adipose layer hence blocking the blood flow that improves erection.
Physiological changes within the body mechanisms affect greatly. Injuries to the spinal cord can greatly influence hormonal imbalances that lead to lower sexual response. Besides, excision of some parts of the brain (hemispherectomy) cans greatly influence hormonal release.
Recent studies show that tobacco smoking, chronic alcoholism and drugs abuse impacts on the size of blood vessels and hence blood flow. They have been proved that the drugs cause blood vessels constriction that results in slow blood flow to the penile tissues. Chemotherapies have been related to erectile dysfunction. This is based on the disruption of normal hormonal releases, which might affect the tissues. Whether it is hormonal imbalance, surgeries, diabetes, smoking, drugs abuse, vascular disease, kidneys malfunctions, or atherosclerosis; erectile dysfunction is a preventable disease, with a cure still in clinical trials.
